Flower Power

Ly Huynh will show you how to embrace spring wholeheartedly, using this season's trademark - floral!

With the return of sunny days and balmy nights, spring signals a time for carefree, fun, and flirty dressing. A huge trend for spring this year, and the perfect way to embrace the spirit of the season, is floral prints. Floral adds an injection of pattern and a splash of colour to your wardrobe, and gives the wearer an instant aura of femininity.

Floral comes in a range of sizes and shapes that can create very different effects. Small, repetitive patterns are delicate, girly and pretty, with the charm of a field of wildflowers. Slightly larger patterns are reminiscent of a bountiful bouquet and are a romantic and ladylike option, while large, graphic floral motifs demand attention as the focal point of outfits and are a modern and bold take on the floral trend.

Fresh and fun to wear, floral translates easily into the different sections of your wardrobe. Floral day dresses are an elegant way to tap into the trend, and are destined to become a staple for casual but chic weekend dressing, while floral blouses and skirts add interest and vivacity to workwear. Floral is also blooming across the prettiest bikinis and making it's mark on maxi-dresses and evening gowns.

Accessories have also been given the floral treatment, with flowers appearing on hair ornaments, jewellery and scarves - ideal as a finishing touch for those wanting to fully immerse themselves in florals, or as an unintimidating first step for those wanting to tentatively introduce floral into their wardrobes.

So celebrate the season by putting on your own floriade; add some floral to your spring and some spring to your step.

Sunglasses Mean One Thing, Sunshine!

Finally the horrible winter has given way to sunshine again, just like glasses have given way to contacts, some might say. Tracy Tam explores this weird but interesting phenomenon.

Gone are the days of endlessly wearing as many layers as one can get their hands on, as Sydneysiders finally prepare for a season that looked like it would never arrive. Everyone brace yourselves - spring has finally sprung!

So what's the point, people ask? A new season can only mean one thing - time for new sunnies! (That's not to say you can't pull out your ones from last season, of course).

For a while we've been told smaller sunnies are back in. But to quote a certain famous line, "Where the bloody hell are you?" There's no sign of smaller sunnies anywhere - not in stores, not in fashion mags and perhaps more importantly, not on the stars! So, I guess that prediction has gone down the gurgler, at least for now

So, what's really in? Trends this season are again, leaning towards the Wayfarers that were reintroduced by Rayban for the last couple of seasons, but this time they come with a twist - they're frameless on the bottom.

Craig
Craig wears a white t-shirt with red motif, skinny leg jeans and sunnies.

The other usual suspects are still around - big, oversized sunnies in all different shapes and colours. There's a push for white heading towards summer, not bad if you can pull it off (but maybe minus all the bling that's going around at the moment!)

Other weird and colourful glasses favourite for the manufacturers - reds, greens, blues, yellows - you name it, they're making it. Try them if you dare!

As I have said before in a previous article, it's important to note the classifications of sunnies (not just the brand and styles). Category three is for good sun protection (the best) and two is for medium sun protection. It's extremely uncommon to find anything below that classification. Some good-quality, yet affordable brands include Polaroid and The Cancer Council. Not only are they both made by The Cancer Council, but you'll find most of their styles carry a good protective classification. Although, their styles are more limited than some of the other brands on offer.

Another tip I always offer is that it's always worth spending a bit extra on sunnies because a good pair will last you a lifetime (or at least until you get sick of them!)

Now to a new phenomenon that has caught my eye (no pun intended). It seems everywhere I go I've noticed people have traded in their contacts for glasses! To explore this concept I asked my favourite office worker (my sister) what this is all about. According to my sister, the so called 'corpie' (corporate) look is now fashionable and in many cases glasses go hand-in-hand with this look, especially for those who face the computer all day long. Moreover, computers tend to dry up people's eyes and contacts are no longer feasible. (I'm thinking the price of disposal contacts might have something to do with that, too!) Either way, glasses seem to be the new contacts, just as spring has become the new winter! Besides, it's about time nerds became cool!

If you still need convincing, just take a look at US Republican vice president candidate Sarah Palin - the woman doesn't go anywhere without a pair of glasses and look where that has landed her! (Not bad for the former Alaskan beauty queen).

Paula

In conclusion, the most common look is still leaning towards thicker framed glasses, mostly black, but other colours have been creeping in here and there including maroons and navy blues, which are also nice. Local optometrists have also brought in frameless glasses (not just recently) and they seem to be quite popular too, particularly with the experimental glasses-shy folk! Glasses with thin metal frames are also common but less so compared to the other two styles.

To add more incentive for those who want to join this fashion band wagon, I've also noticed that in some optometrists that I've walked past lately, there have been deals for discount frames. So if you have ever thought of investing in a pair of glasses, there has never been a better time to try them out!

Until next time, Tracy Tam.
